How to run an SEO audit on your own site

An SEO audit checks every page of your site for the few things search engines read first, so you know what to fix. You can do it yourself with free tools in four steps: list your pages, check each one can be found, read your titles and descriptions, then tell search engines what changed.

What an audit is for

Search engines read a few things on every page before they decide to show it. An audit checks those things on all of your pages, so you fix the biggest problem first.

Small sites often lose out on the basics: a page told to stay out of search by accident, or a sitemap nobody ever sent.

Step 1: List every page

Start from your sitemap, usually at yoursite.com/sitemap.xml. No sitemap? List the pages in your menu and footer.

Mark the pages that matter most to your business and check those first.

Step 2: Check each page can be found

Open each page's source and look for a robots tag that says noindex, and for a redirect to another address. Either one keeps that address out of search.

Then open yoursite.com/robots.txt and make sure it doesn't block pages you want found. In Google Search Console, the Pages report lists the pages Google left out and why.

Step 3: Read your titles and descriptions

The title and description are what people see in the results, so they decide whether anyone clicks. Every page needs its own.

Keep the title to about 60 characters, with the main search phrase near the front, since longer titles often get cut off. Keep the description to about 150 characters, and say what the page does for the reader in your customers' words.

On a big site this takes a while. If you use Claude Code or Codex, The SEO Kit checks every page for you and writes new titles and descriptions for you to approve.

Step 4: Tell search engines what changed

Send your sitemap in Google Search Console and in Bing Webmaster Tools. After you fix a page, IndexNow tells Bing and other search engines that the page changed.

For a few key pages, you can also click "Request indexing" in Search Console.
